When someone decides to seek help through drug treatment they have just made a very important decision to change their life. Some of the most effective types of treatment are programs that are residential. This requires one to stay away from home for some time period while receiving treatment for a drug or alcohol problem. However whether the program is a drug treatment that allows cell phones and laptops, or not, is often an important deciding factor on which program to go into. Rules and guidelines on this differ from center to center. Some fell it is important to keep one connected electronically while others may feel that it can deter one from making the needed changes during the rehabilitation process.
Environment Change and Residential Treatment
Most individuals begin to use drugs because of something undesirable that has occurred in their life. It could be a problem with a family relationship or situation, stress at work, a difficult financial situation, a painful physical or psychological situation or peer pressure from others that cause an individual to take up drug use. If this individual participates in out-patient rehabilitation care, it is safe to say that they may benefit from some aspect of their daily care only to fall back into the trap of addiction when they return home to their “normal” environment. It’s somewhat like pulling a person out of a fiery home, dousing their flames and sending them back in with fingers crossed that they won’t get burnt. While it make work for some individuals, perhaps those with short-term addictions, it is not always effective at helping all drug addicts successfully resolve their addictions.
Residential rehabilitation treatment pulls the individual completely away from their normal living environment and intensively addresses their problems with addiction. Obviously, there is no opportunity to slip back into drug use while in a drug-free residential rehabilitation facility, which may be a necessary barrier for those who are struggling against long-term and very difficult addictions. Residential rehabilitation treatment could be likened to pulling the individual from a fiery home, dousing their flames, healing their wounds and helping them see that in the future, should they see a home on fire, it would be best for them to stay well away. These programs can often result in a truly rehabilitated individual – someone restored to health and their ability to produce well in society.
Cell Phones and Laptops at Rehab
Just as different rehabilitation facilities offer different treatment programs, they also have different rules and guidelines regarding the use of cell phones or laptops. The reasons for these rules may vary, but following are some things to consider regarding the use of electronics during drug treatment:
– Communication channels
Many individuals who are suffering from substance abuse problems have far fewer healthy relationships with friends and family than sober individuals. Ideally, effective drug treatment would enable the individual to rebuild his relationships with others. Cell phones and laptops could provide communication channels by which the individual can remain in touch with friends and family or work to rebuild their relationships.
In some cases, however, it may also be true that an individual is holding on to an unhealthy relationship – perhaps with a fellow addict or even a drug dealer. In this case, closing their unhealthy communication channels by prohibiting cell phones or laptops during treatment can be helpful.
Some individuals may not have suffered the full damages of drug or alcohol addiction, and may still have a job that they are trying to maintain while they attend treatment. For these individuals, having a cell phone or laptop to use during drug treatment can make treatment more workable with their schedule in life.
For some, their drug use may stem from job-related stress, and it would be better for them to disconnect from their work entirely while participating in drug treatment.
Drug treatment can be very difficult, and some individuals may find it helpful to have good distractions – recreational activities, games, and so forth. These individuals they may find cell phones and laptops pleasantly distracting.
Others may be distracted off their drug treatment path by the regular use of cell phones and laptops, and would benefit from entirely focusing on their program as laid out by the facility.
Individual Choice on Use of Electronics in Rehab
While certain facilities lay down the law regarding even the existence of cell phones or laptops while on their drug treatment program, others may allow the individual to choose. When trying to decide whether to leave the cell phone or laptop at home, it is important to consider what one is trying to accomplish by attending drug treatment. If a cell phone or laptop may potentially cause one more difficulty and distraction, they should certainly be left behind.
