While not everyone religiously checks the labels of everything they consume, many individuals do rely on the information that product labels provide in order to decide whether or not they want to consume it. What if these labels are incomplete, misleading or just entirely wrong? In the case of alcoholic beverages, labels that fail to give an individual the full, honest picture of the product are essentially failing to warn them of the very real and often serious dangers of alcohol consumption.
The Dangers of Alcohol Consumption
For some individuals, many social occasions like sports games, parties and birthdays are opportunities to drink alcohol, often in a manner that is highly risky. Because few individuals understand the truth about alcohol and its effects on the human body, it can often happen that they may be suffering from alcohol tolerance and abuse without recognizing it. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines moderate alcohol consumption as the consumption of no more than one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, a fact that may surprise many individuals who consider themselves casual, low-risk drinkers but who consume more than this amount.
Alcohol is a drug chemical that works to slow the normal functioning of the brain and central nervous system. It can happen that individuals consume alcohol in order to experience these effects, relaxing their anxiety and stress. However, alcohol chemicals cannot remain in the bloodstream indefinitely or they can permanently impair or damage body systems and organs. The liver works to metabolize alcohol, removing the chemical toxins and flushing them out of the system. As can be understood, the liver can only metabolize a certain amount of alcohol chemicals at one time, and can be quickly overwhelmed by excessive or long-term alcohol consumption.
Excessive alcohol consumption can lead to overdose, wherein the body reaches a highly toxic state. Overdose effects can range in severity from impaired balance to coma or even death, and is often recognized as alcohol poisoning. Too much alcohol chemicals in the bloodstream causes key areas of the brain to slow and even begin to shut down. These key areas control the body’s basic life-support systems, such as respiration, heart rate and temperature control. Some signs of alcohol poisoning include mental confusion, stupor, coma, inability to wake up, vomiting, seizures, slow breathing, irregular breathing, slowed heart rate, clammy skin and hypothermia.
Some individuals believe that they can handle a high alcohol content in their body by sleeping it off, drinking coffee, taking a walk or taking a cold shower. Unfortunately, none of these actions help the liver eliminate alcohol toxins from the bloodstream and body.
How Alcohol Bottles Should be Labeled
The way that alcohol is presented to consumers can make it seem safe, acceptable and appealing without painting a clear picture of the many damaging effects that can result from excessive alcohol consumption. Instead of suggestive names that imply wide ranges of benefits, more honest alcoholic beverage labels would allude to what alcohol consumption may result in for the individual, and may say things like:

These label names may seem rudely graphic, but the fact is that they are simply honest. If nothing else, the new labels would make someone think twice before grabbing a bottle.
